Day 3 - Heading North to Canon City By Way of The Great Sand Dunes

It truly is a small world. Today packing up our cars a man on the side of us was doing the same. He and Miles started up a conversation about our Mustang, then he noticed the license plate. He asked what part of LA were we from. It turned out that he grew up in north Louisiana, but he met his wife at USL. She was from New Iberia. He was the second person we met from LA. From there we set off for the Great Sand Dunes.

These great dunes are 30 square miles and are the largest dunes in North America.

It was great to see families all around playing on and around the dunes as though it were a coastal beach. One family had an open tent staked out and to the side of the tent was a volley ball court.

By the time we finished playing at the dunes we stopped in at the National Park's restaurant, The Oasis.

On our journey to our next destination, Canon City, CO, we happened upon a rest stop close to Walsenburg. We wanted to check with the information center on the best route to get to Canon City. Here we met with a retired Air Force lady. She must have been a little lonely, because by the time we left we had known her life story. And in her many travels she once live in LA. She gave us a route that would take us through San Cristo Mountain Range so that we would be able to see the Bishop Castle, which as been in the process of being built for 49 years.

It was quite a local tourist attraction.

Even dinner is an adventure with our group. We had decided to go to a local place, Ole Chicago Barbeque. After going around in circles in the small town, we settled for Mexican food, El Alazan. It was okay. On the way back to the hotel, we found the barbeque restaurant, but it was closed.
